Post-Operative Foot & Ankle Care: The POLICE Principle

Protect:

  • Immediate Post-Op: Limit movement and weight-bearing activities as per your doctor’s advice.
  • Use of Supports: Utilize crutches, braces, or splints as recommended to protect the area from further injury.

Optimal Loading:

  • Gradual Weight Bearing: As your healing progresses, slowly reintroduce weight-bearing activities.
  • Physiotherapy Exercises: Engage in prescribed exercises to strengthen the area without causing undue stress.

Ice:

  • Reduce Swelling and Pain: Apply ice packs to the affected area for 15-20 minutes every 2-3 hours.
  • Careful Application: Use a cloth barrier between the ice pack and your skin to prevent ice burns.

Compression:

  • Manage Swelling: Use an elastic compression bandage or garment as instructed.
  • Balanced Compression: Ensure the bandage is snug but not too tight to avoid restricting blood flow.

Elevation:

  • Reduce Swelling: Elevate your foot and ankle above heart level when possible, especially after activity or during sleep.
  • Supportive Positioning: Use pillows or cushions for comfortable elevation.

Recovery Tips:

  • Monitor Your Progress: Be aware of your pain levels and swelling. Contact your physiotherapist if you notice increased pain or other concerning symptoms.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Regularly attend your scheduled follow-up appointments for optimal recovery.
