If you can turn further, surely you’ll hit the ball further. Not always. In fact, chasing more shoulder flexibility can sometimes make things worse.

For right-handed golfers, the left shoulder plays a major role throughout the swing.

Many golfers chase a longer backswing in search of more distance. Unfortunately, bigger isn’t always better. Forcing extra movement can increase stress on the shoulder without improving performance.

Poor Upper Back Mobility
If your upper back doesn’t rotate well, your shoulder often compensates. That means more strain on the shoulder and less efficient movement overall.

Too Much Practice, Too Soon
A weekend range session can quickly turn into several hundred golf balls. Your enthusiasm may be admirable. Your shoulder may have a different opinion. Lack of Strength and Endurance Golf doesn’t require your shoulder to lift heavy weights. It requires your shoulder to tolerate thousands of swings over time. That’s a very different challenge.

Does a Bigger Backswing Create More Distance?

Research suggests that efficient golfers generate speed through:

  • Good rotation
  • Effective sequencing
  • Strong movement through the whole body
  • Efficient transfer of energy

Not by simply forcing their shoulder into a bigger position. The best golfers don’t necessarily move further. They move more efficiently.

Distance loss is often blamed on age. Sometimes age plays a role. But many golfers lose distance because their bodies stop moving as efficiently as they once did.

  • Stiffness through the upper back
  • Reduced strength
  • Poor movement habits
  • Loss of physical conditioning
  • Ongoing shoulder discomfort

The good news is that many of these factors can be improved.

Do I Need More Mobility or More Stability?

This is one of the most important questions golfers can ask. The answer is usually: A bit of both. Mobility allows you to move. Stability allows you to control that movement.

Too little mobility can make your swing feel restricted. Too little stability can make your shoulder work harder than it should. The sweet spot is having enough movement combined with enough control. That’s where performance and durability tend to meet.
